Fuel discount lowers petrol prices significantly in May – diesel 27 cents cheaper

Motorists are now clearly feeling the relief from the fuel discount. Handelsblatt reports that Super E10 cost on average just under 13 cents per litre less than in April, while diesel became even 27 cents cheaper. The figures come from the Monopolies Commission and the Ifo Institute, which regularly record fuel prices.

The effect of the fuel discount was initially subdued. Der Tagesspiegel explains that prices fell only moderately after the discount was introduced. Only towards the end of the month did the full relief effect become apparent according to the ADAC. This suggests that it took time for the state subsidy to fully reach the pumps.

Crude oil prices and geopolitical factors

The price decline is driven by several factors. Süddeutsche Zeitung contextualises that in addition to the fuel discount, the development of crude oil prices also plays a role. Geopolitical tensions in the Iran conflict had put oil prices under pressure, which is now being felt at the petrol stations.

For commuters and frequent drivers, the development means noticeable relief in mobility costs. The diesel price decline is particularly pronounced, which benefits lorry drivers and owners of diesel vehicles. Whether prices remain stable at this level or whether new fluctuations follow depends on the further development of crude oil markets and the duration of the fuel discount.
