Vingegaard wins Giro stage and stands on brink of Grand Tour trilogy

Jonas Vingegaard prevailed on the penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia. At the mountain finish in Piancavallo, the Danish cycling professional claimed victory and secured his fifth stage win of this race. With this success, Vingegaard extended his lead in the overall standings and now stands on the brink of overall victory.

Comfortable lead ahead of Rome

Vingegaard holds a comfortable margin over his rivals, so a crash or withdrawal would be needed to prevent him from winning. On Sunday, the race ends in Rome – where the 27-year-old would seal his first Giro victory. With this, Vingegaard would join the very exclusive circle of riders who have won all three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España).

Australia's Jai Hindley secured third place on the same stage and thus solidifies his position on the overall podium. Egan Bernal also made it into the top 10 of the general classification and had a strong third week at the Giro.
