Vingegaard secures Giro triumph — Grand Tour trilogy complete

Danish professional cyclist Jonas Vingegaard won on Saturday at the mountain finish in Piancavallo, securing his fifth stage victory in this Giro edition. With this success, he extended his lead in the overall standings and now stands on the brink of overall victory in the Italian Grand Tour.

Vingegaard leads the classification with a comfortable margin – only a crash or withdrawal in the final stage to Rome would be needed to prevent him from winning. This puts the 27-year-old on the verge of joining the exclusive circle of riders who have won all three Grand Tours (Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España). Jai Hindley from Australia secured third place on the same stage and solidified his position on the podium.

Dominance on the mountain

Vingegaard had already established himself in recent years as one of the strongest climbers in the peloton. The mountain finish in Piancavallo at the winter sports resort played into his hands – exactly the terrain where the Dane showcases his strengths. With five stage victories in this Giro edition, he underscores his dominance in this Grand Tour.

The final stage to Rome on Sunday will be a formality for Vingegaard. Egan Bernal managed to reach the top 10 of the overall standings with a strong third week and rounded off a successful Giro for Colombian riders. Vingegaard will thus make history – as one of the few riders to achieve the Grand Tour trilogy feat.
