Israel advances deep into southern Lebanon, soldier killed in drone attack

Israeli soldiers on Sunday captured Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon and raised the Israeli flag over the medieval Crusader fortress. Haaretz reports that this represents the deepest Israeli ground operation in Lebanon in 26 years. The capture marks a turning point in the escalating confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah.

The offensive claimed immediate casualties: 21-year-old non-commissioned officer Michael Tyukin, who had moved to Israel from Ukraine, was killed in a Hezbollah drone attack. The Guardian reports that Tyukin was an only child and the first known fatality in this phase of ground operations. Defence Minister Yoav Gallant hailed the capture of Beaufort as a strategic victory and symbol of Israeli strength in earlier Lebanon wars.

Air strikes and evacuations in the south

Parallel to the military operation, Israel ordered evacuations from more than a dozen locations in southern Lebanon on Saturday and conducted air strikes across a large area. Al Jazeera documents that gunfire was heard and smoke rose over the region as civilians left the affected zones.

Domestically, political resistance to the Netanyahu government is mounting. Spiegel reports that Danny Elgarat, whose brother was murdered by Hamas, is running for the Knesset and plans to challenge Netanyahu's cabinet. Elgarat thus becomes a symbol of growing domestic tensions over the conduct of the war.

Forest reserves at the northern border

The Israeli ministry also announced the designation of eight new forest reserves along the northern border – a step that, according to Politico, is part of a broader national protection initiative. The measure underscores Israel's focus on the northern border region during a phase of intensified operations against Hezbollah.
