Shortly before the planned opening on Saturday, strong wind damaged the inflatable art installation «La Caverne du Pont-Neuf» by French artist JR. When the work at Paris's oldest bridge will open to the public remains unclear.
A violent gust of wind damaged the inflatable cave structure around the Pont Neuf on Monday afternoon. Tagesschau reports that the opening of the installation, originally scheduled for Saturday, June 6, must now be postponed. The organisers confirmed the damage without initially naming a new date.
According to Le Figaro, the exact cause of the damage has not yet been conclusively determined. An intense gust of wind hit Paris in the afternoon – whether this alone is responsible for the damage must be assessed by those in charge after a thorough inspection. The new opening date depends directly on the results of this review.
According to The Straits Times, «La Caverne du Pont-Neuf» is a temporary installation in which JR places a giant inflated cave around the oldest bridge in the French capital. The project is conceived as a tribute to packaging artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude, who wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric in 1985 – one of the most famous works in 20th-century art history.
Ouest-France adds that after repairs, the installation is to be freely accessible for several weeks. How long the repair work will take has not been communicated by the organisers so far. Libération notes that the Paris public and numerous art enthusiasts from around the world had already been looking forward to the opening day with great anticipation – the delay thus hits the project at a particularly sensitive moment of public attention.
