Welfare associations warn of rising poverty in Germany

Poverty in Germany is increasing. The Paritätische Wohlfahrtsverband warns the federal government against further cuts to the social system, after current figures show that 16.1 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. The association speaks of "alarming figures" and sees politics as having a duty to act.

Particularly concerning are the regional differences. In Hesse, the poverty rate is above the national average, while in Saarland one in six people is affected by poverty – the rate there has risen slightly again. These disparities suggest that poverty in Germany is not an evenly distributed phenomenon, but rather certain federal states are significantly more burdened.

Spending cuts worsen the situation

The welfare association explicitly warns that planned spending cuts could worsen the situation. Instead of cuts, the association calls for strengthening social security systems. Rising rates point to structural problems – from wage stagnation to housing shortages to insufficient transfer payments.

The figures raise questions about the effectiveness of social policy to date. While the federal government is fighting poverty with various measures, data from the welfare association shows that these apparently are not sufficient to reduce the rate. Particularly vulnerable groups – single parents, retirees, and people without vocational qualifications – are disproportionately affected.

Regional solutions required

The regional differences also suggest that local economic strength and labour market opportunities play a major role. States with weaker economies record higher poverty rates. The association therefore calls not only for national but also targeted regional solutions.
