Deutsche Bahn stabilizes long-distance service: 61 percent punctual in May

Deutsche Bahn stabilized its punctuality in long-distance service in May. Süddeutsche Zeitung reports that 61.3 percent of all long-distance trains arrived on time – a figure that runs counter to the usual seasonal trend. Normally, punctuality rates decline over the course of the year because more construction sites and maintenance work burden operations.

The rate thus shows a certain stability compared to previous months, even though Handelsblatt reports that Deutsche Bahn was slightly less punctual in May than in the months before. However, the difference is marginal – it amounts to just a few tenths of a percentage point. By comparison: at the beginning of the year, punctuality was significantly lower, which underscores the improvement since spring.

Structural challenges remain

In concrete terms: more than one in three long-distance trains arrived late in May. Zeit Online reports that while this share is higher than in the immediately preceding months, it is significantly better than in the first weeks of the year. Deutsche Bahn continues to struggle with structural challenges – infrastructure deficiencies, staff shortages, and the complexity of the German rail network burden operations.

For Deutsche Bahn, stabilizing the figures during a construction phase is a success that the company communicates as progress. However, the absolute rate of just over 60 percent remains far short of the expectations of passengers and politicians, who regard a rate of at least 75 to 80 percent as standard. Competitive pressure from private operators and the federal government's expectations for a modernized railway thus remain high.
