*Update*: Wolfsburg signs Hornby – but Pejcinovic departure clouds the day

VfL Wolfsburg is getting serious about building a squad capable of competing in the second division. kicker reports that Fraser Hornby is being signed from SV Darmstadt 98. The Scottish striker was recently one of the most eye-catching attackers at the Lilien and is meant to provide goal-scoring threat in the 2. Bundesliga – a clear signal that chief executive Dieter Hecking wants to deliberately strengthen the attack.

But the transfer has a downside: at the same time, transfermarkt.de reports that the danger is mounting that Dzenan Pejcinovic will leave the club. The attacking player was regarded internally as one of the few bright spots in the relegation season, and his possible departure would significantly hamper the rebuild.

The Alexander Blessin matter as a possible new head coach also appears to be off the table. Hamburger Morgenpost reports that the advisor of FC St. Pauli's coach laughed off the Wolfsburg rumour – a clear rejection. According to reports, Blessin is currently holding squad talks at the Kiezclub, and the trend clearly points towards staying on the Elbe. Wolfsburg must continue looking in its search for a coach.

Hannover becomes a direct rival

Liga environment: Hannoversche Allgemeine reports that Jonas Boldt stated on his first day as sports director at Hannover 96 that Bundesliga promotion is a clear goal – and explicitly wants to draw on experience from his HSV days. Hannover thus becomes a direct rival in the promotion race, which Wolfsburg must take seriously from the start.

For VfL, this creates a mixed picture: with Hornby – and the already reported Glatzel – the attack is taking shape. The open coaching question and the looming Pejcinovic departure show, however, that Hecking still has some issues to resolve before preparations for the new season begin.
