Earthquake of magnitude 6.2 shakes southern Italy off Calabria's coast

The earthquake hit the Calabria region during the night and was registered by several measuring stations. The magnitude is reported by various sources as between 6.1 and 6.2, with the epicentre located off the coast near Amantea. The depth of the quake was approximately 250 kilometres, which is typical for deep subduction earthquakes in this region.

The tremors were felt not only in Calabria but also reached the south-eastern region of Salento and were registered across large parts of southern Italy. Residents reported intense moments of fright, but no damage has been reported so far.

Seismic activity in the Tyrrhenian Sea

The Tyrrhenian Sea off Calabria's coast is seismically active and is characterised by the subduction of the African plate beneath the Eurasian plate. Earthquakes of this magnitude at this depth are not unusual in the region, but due to their depth typically cause less surface damage than shallower quakes.

Italian authorities conducted inspections to assess any possible damage. Initial reports suggest that while the population experienced considerable fear, structural damage was avoided. The region remains under observation for possible aftershocks.
