*Update*: Politics disappointed, port district divided — Hamburg processes the Olympic no

The political processing of the Hamburg Olympic no is in full swing. NDR reports that the SPD, Greens and CDU have reacted with disappointment to the vote, while the Left explicitly welcomes the decision of Hamburg's citizens. The Red-Green Senate is under particular pressure: Hamburg Journal editor-in-chief Jan Frenzel comments that the negative result is primarily the Senate's responsibility.

The no was particularly clear in the port area. On the Veddel, the small Grasbrook and in Steinwerder, rejection was well above average – only HafenCity voted in favour of a bid. A data analysis by NDR Data shows the connection: NDR reports that wealthier districts tended to vote for the Olympics, while lower-income districts voted against it. The picture of a city divided by prosperity is thus becoming more entrenched.

Disappointment in sport and the region

Reactions are also coming from the sports world. Sailors Hanna Wille and Marla Bergmann are disappointed with the outcome of the vote, as NDR reports. For them and many other athletes, the result means the end of a concrete home games hope.

Moreover, Hamburg's no also hits Schleswig-Holstein hard. The Hanseatic city had wanted to compete together with Kiel – this joint project will now come to nothing. Der Tagesspiegel reports that Kiel's Olympic dream has also burst for the time being.

Modernisation of Hamburg Sports Hall

There is, however, an unexpected side effect of the referendum: According to NDR, the city is planning a comprehensive modernisation of Hamburg Sports Hall in Winterhude. The historic hall on Krochmannstraße is to receive a multi-million euro upgrade – regardless of whether the Olympics come or not.
