Italy bans concerts by Kanye West and Travis Scott

Italian authorities have prohibited the performances by Kanye West and Travis Scott scheduled for July in Reggio Emilia. The city's prefect justified the decision with "reasons of public order and safety". The two concerts were to take place in front of up to 100,000 people.

The local Jewish community had expressed concerns about West's performances, as the 48-year-old rapper has faced criticism for years over antisemitic remarks. The cancellation follows several concert bans in other European countries in recent weeks – France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Poland had already taken similar measures.

Security concerns and European pattern

For West, this is already the third cancellation within six weeks. Italian authorities also cited the cancellations of other West concerts, which played a role in their decision. The security concerns relate to the impossibility of guaranteeing the safety of such a large crowd over two nights.

The decision shows a pattern: several European countries have recently banned or restricted West's concerts. While the Netherlands initially allowed the rapper to perform, other countries have opted for bans. The Italian cancellation underscores how controversial West's public appearances have become in Europe – not only because of his artistic work, but especially because of his political statements and their impact on public safety.
