*Update*: Two deaths confirmed in mountain accidents in Trentino and Aosta Valley

Mountain rescue has clarified the circumstances of the two fatal accidents from Saturday. Tiroler Tageszeitung reports that the first accident occurred in the Dolomites in Trentino, where a climber fell to his death. The second accident involved a hiker who fell on the north slope of Gran Paradiso in the Aosta Valley and also lost his life.

The two incidents are not directly related, but they illustrate how dangerous conditions were in the Italian Alps that weekend. ANSA reports that emergency services were alerted quickly in both cases, but the victims could not be rescued. The exact circumstances – such as whether equipment deficiencies, weather influences, or misjudgement of the route played a role – are still under investigation.

Dangerous conditions in the high Alps

Gran Paradiso, at 4,061 metres the highest peak located entirely on Italian territory, attracts numerous mountaineers every spring once snow conditions permit initial ascents.
