*Update*: Farm fire, lightning strikes and basement smoke — fire series continues

The day's largest damage is caused by a fire in Gmund am Tegernsee. Since the early morning hours, an agricultural property in the hamlet of Baumgarten has been in flames; Münchner Merkur reports damage in the millions after the residential section of the farm is completely destroyed. A dense column of smoke is visible for kilometres around, numerous rescue services are deployed for hours.

On the evening of the same day, two lightning bolts strike in Bergisch Gladbach. Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger reports that a roof structure catches fire, a tree is struck and buildings and cars are damaged in the process. Here too, a major fire service operation is necessary.

Further operations in the region

Already on Monday evening, a garden shed in Kiel-Wellingdorf had caught fire. According to Kieler Nachrichten, residents alerted the fire service around 21:30, which arrived with 30 personnel. The fire spread to surrounding trees but was brought under control.

Also on Monday, heavy smoke poured from a basement room of an apartment building in Lehrte-Hämelerwald. Hannoversche Allgemeine reports that the fire service responded – the exact cause initially remained unclear.

On Tuesday evening, two fire brigades finally deployed to Villach-Warmbad in Austria after smoke was detected in the basement of the Kärntner Therme. Kleine Zeitung notes that there was no danger to guests and the operation ended without serious incident.

The clustering of events shows a pattern that Stern has already documented for the ongoing fire series: dry weather, thunderstorms with lightning strikes and technical defects are converging in these weeks with fire services stretched simultaneously in many places. The damage in Gmund alone is likely to dominate the day's tally significantly.
