Knife attacker from Bielefeld sentenced to life imprisonment

The court imposed the maximum sentence on Mahmoud M. after he attacked several people with a knife outside a bar in Bielefeld last year. Der Spiegel reports that four of the five victims suffered life-threatening injuries. The defendant was convicted, among other things, of attempted murder.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office classifies the 36-year-old as still dangerous due to his Islamist ideology. According to Stern, Mahmoud M. was a member of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS). The court also took into account in its verdict that, in the judges' assessment, the defendant shows no compassion for his victims.

HAZ reports that the crime occurred more than a year ago and the proceedings are now concluded with this conviction. Life imprisonment is the maximum sentence in Germany and is typically imposed for particularly serious crimes such as murder or attempted murder.
