Thirty military horses run out of control in Rome – four injured

The horses were gathered at the Caracalla Baths in Rome to train for the military parade marking Italy's national holiday. For reasons still unclear, the animals panicked and fled in wild flight across the heavily trafficked Via Cristoforo Colombo in central Rome.

According to La Stampa, much suggests that fireworks triggered the panic – possibly set off by a traffic police officer. The approximately 30 horses galloped between parked cars, damaged several vehicles and injured four people in the process. Officers from the Polizia Municipale then closed off traffic to prevent further accidents.

Investigation into responsibility launched

Il Messaggero reports that the scene was filmed by several motorists and passersby. An investigation is underway and an information report has been forwarded to the public prosecutor's office. Responsibility for the fireworks that were set off is currently being investigated – should an officer's involvement be confirmed, this could have serious consequences.

The military parade on June 2 is one of Italy's most important state events and takes place annually in Rome. Rehearsals normally proceed without incident. How this mishap occurred is now being clarified by the authorities.
