*Update*: Rome's Parade Horses: New Details on Injured and Extent of Damage

The images from Thursday caused a stir in Italy: around 30 military horses galloped uncontrollably along the Via Cristoforo Colombo, one of Rome's busiest arterial roads. Now more precise details about the consequences are available. ANSA reports that several of the injured persons received outpatient treatment, including pedestrians and at least one soldier who fell while attempting to capture the animals.

The extent of damage to parked and moving vehicles along the street is larger than initially reported, according to la Repubblica: several cars had dents, broken side mirrors and damaged bodywork. Residents reported a chaotic scene that stretched over several hundred meters before soldiers and police brought the animals under control.

Authorities Launch Investigation

According to La Stampa, authorities are now examining whether a vehicle noise or another external stimulus triggered the panic. The military administration has launched an internal investigation. It has been officially confirmed so far that the horses belong to the Corazzieri unit, the mounted honor guard of the Italian President.

The incidents raise questions about the safety of rehearsals, which traditionally take place on public streets. National Day – the so-called Festa della Repubblica – takes place on June 2, with the large military parade on the Fori Imperiali forming the centerpiece of the celebrations. Il Mattino reports that organizers want to stick to the planned procedures despite the incident. Whether the affected horses will participate in the parade remains open.

The population in the area around the Caracalla Baths reacted with a mixture of shock and relief that no serious injuries were sustained – given the heavy traffic on Via Colombo, the incident could have turned out much worse.
