Mészáros withdraws two billion forints from his company

Lőrinc Mészáros and his children are withdrawing two billion forints from the Mészáros Group, named after him. As Hungarian media report, the dividend payment is taking place even though the company's revenue declined in 2024 compared to the previous year. Notably, profit was maintained at the same level despite the revenue decline.

The transaction fits into a series of questionable dealings that Telex has documented, further shaking confidence in the transparency of Orbán's circle. Mészáros is considered one of the Prime Minister's closest business associates and has significantly increased his wealth in recent years through numerous government contracts and subsidies.

The dividend payment coincides with reports of further questionable dealings in Orbán's circle – from the controversial tobacco reform to opaque business relationships. Hungarian news sources document a pattern in which the Prime Minister's associates benefit from state funds while oversight by independent institutions weakens.

The EU Commission has previously expressed concerns about corruption risks in Hungary. The current dividend payment could put new pressure on Brussels institutions to scrutinize the release of further funds more critically.
