*Update*: Gun attack in Sarandi, family tragedy in SC and assault in Portugal

In northern Brazilian Sarandi, the Polícia Civil do Paraná is searching for a 32-year-old man who allegedly shot three members of the same family in a bar – a couple and a teenager. UOL reports that an arrest warrant has been issued and the suspect is considered at large. Authorities have launched search operations throughout the northern part of the state.

Also in Santa Catarina, another fatal family tragedy occurred on Saturday afternoon in Itaiópolis: A man shot his 68-year-old father-in-law and seriously wounded his 63-year-old wife after the two refused to hand over his grandson to him. Público reports that police arrested the perpetrator that night. The case raises questions once again about domestic conflicts and access to firearms in rural regions of Brazil.

Violence against emergency personnel and justice

Also in Chapecó, also in Santa Catarina, police responded during the night: A ten-year-old boy spent the night alone in an apartment and called for help from a balcony. According to Folha de S.Paulo, military police and the child protection council were alerted; the child was brought to safety and the case was handed over to social services.

In Portugal, an incident in the north of the country has sparked outrage: A 27-year-old firefighter from the Mirandela corporation was attacked by a man near her station on Sunday evening and subsequently required hospital treatment. Expresso reports that authorities have launched an investigation. The attack on an emergency responder on duty has triggered a debate in Portugal about the protection of rescue personnel.

On the sidelines of the criminal incidents stands a civil law ruling: A Brazilian court sentenced journalist Grace Abdou from TV Record and the broadcaster itself to pay damages of 15,000 reais after a lawyer claimed he was attacked by her with a microphone in 2024. According to Reuters this is a first-instance ruling against which legal remedies can be filed.
