*Update*: Police officer shot in Dortmund – suspect barricades with children

Two firearms deployments in one day are keeping German security authorities on alert. Early in the morning, police discovered a man with life-threatening gunshot wounds in front of a residential building in Buxtehude. The NDR reports that the suspect remained at large until evening – the background to the incident remains unclear.

The situation in southern Dortmund develops far more dramatically. Towards evening, a deployment initially classified as a threat situation escalates there: a man, who is said to have caused a disturbance beforehand, shoots at a police officer. The WDR reports that the officer was shot but prevented the worst through his protective vest – he suffered only minor injuries. Special operations units then move in.

Hostage situation in residential building

After the shot at the police officer, the suspected perpetrator barricades himself in a house – according to media reports together with two children, who may be held as hostages. Tagesspiegel reports that police officially speak of a threat situation and are withholding further details. Zeit Online reports that special operations units are deployed and the situation had not been resolved by around 9 p.m.

Police have cordoned off the area widely. n-tv reports that the man is said to have already drawn attention through causing a disturbance before the situation reached a new escalation point with the shot at the officer. Police initially make no statements about the condition of the children or the exact course of negotiations.

Both incidents are part of a series of police deployments with gunfire that are occupying Germany in June 2026. How things will proceed in Dortmund remains open for now – the deployment is ongoing.
