Spain's coalition crumbles: Juntos and Sumar distance themselves from PSOE

Spain's governing coalition is coming under increasing pressure. Juntos representative Jordi Turull reminded Sánchez that the Catalan party no longer stands behind the government in Congress and accuses the Prime Minister of wanting only to save the PSOE from the "legal quagmire."

Coalition partners on the left are also marking their distance. Sumar called on the PSOE to "clean house" and simultaneously offered the Left "certainty" – with the caveat: "We are spotless." Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun escalated the tone and demanded that the PSOE headquarters on Madrid's Ferraz Street "no longer be an obstacle to the progressive majority."

Pressure from all sides

The PNV criticized that Sánchez only wants to give statements on June 24 – the atmosphere is "unbearable." The Basque party, long a pillar of the government, is thus also signaling impatience.

The opposition is exploiting the weakness. PP General Secretary Miguel Tellado called on the PNV to make a decision: "either with Pedro Sánchez or with democracy". Tellado intensified the pressure and accused the PNV of supporting "the mafia" in the government. He called on the nationalists not only to demand new elections but to bring them about themselves through a vote of no confidence – politicians are not "commentators on current events."

The scenes reveal a pattern: as corruption investigations into PSOE officials continue, Sánchez is losing his informal parliamentary majority. Juntos had already distanced itself from the government multiple times, the PNV is signaling impatience, and even Sumar – the smaller left-wing coalition partner – is setting conditions. The PP senses its opportunity and is trying to push the PNV toward a break.
