Techniker Krankenkasse reports record suspected cases of medical malpractice

The Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) has reached a new record high in reported suspected cases of medical malpractice. Deutschlandfunk reports that insured patients are reporting as many possible errors in medical care as in no previous year.

Three specialist areas in particular stand out due to increased reports. Die Zeit documents that insured patients are increasingly reporting problems in these areas – a sign that patients are increasingly exercising their rights and critically questioning what happens in medical practices and clinics.

Greater transparency leads to more reports

The reasons for the increase are manifold. Der Tagesspiegel analyzes that greater transparency about patient rights and better information options lead affected parties to report their suspected cases more readily. At the same time, the increase could also point to actually more errors – or a combination of both.

The TK data is an indicator of patient safety in the German healthcare system. While Der Spiegel contextualizes the figures, it becomes clear: insured patients are increasingly daring to question treatments and file complaints. This can put pressure on clinics and practices to review their processes and minimize sources of error.
