Tourism in Rhineland-Palatinate grows — while poverty increases

The tourism industry in Rhineland-Palatinate is recording positive figures. Zeit Online reports that the state remains a popular travel destination. Certain regions are benefiting particularly from the demand, while overnight stays in individual areas are also becoming concentrated.

Yet while tourism is attracting visitors, the social situation for many people in the state is deteriorating. The Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband speaks of a concerning development and sees politics as having a duty to act. According to the association, 15.9 percent of the population in Rhineland-Palatinate is now living in poverty – the rate has risen significantly.

Growing inequality despite tourism boom

The definition of poverty follows international standards: people are considered poor if their income is less than 60 percent of median income. The rise in the poverty rate paints a picture of growing inequality in the state – while tourists visit the regions and spend money, more and more residents are struggling with financial difficulties.

The welfare association warns of the long-term consequences of this development and calls for political measures to counteract it. The figures suggest that economic growth in individual sectors does not automatically lead to better living conditions for everyone.
