Four Pakistani workers burned alive in Calabria — two suspects arrested

Four Pakistani braccianti (agricultural laborers) died in a minivan overnight into Tuesday at a petrol station near Amendolara in the Cosentino area (Calabria). ANSA reports that the charred bodies were found in the vehicle on the Statale 106 – not as a result of an accident, as initial assumptions might suggest, but as the consequence of a deliberate act.

The investigation reveals a brutal scenario: two suspects, also Pakistani nationals, are said to have blocked the vehicle's doors from the outside before pouring petrol over the car and setting it alight. Repubblica documents that video footage from the petrol station's surveillance cameras was crucial in reconstructing the crime. The two men were subsequently taken into custody by the Castrovillari public prosecutor's office.

Investigation into Caporalato

Il Messaggero reports that investigators are examining a connection to the so-called caporalato – a system of labor exploitation and control through intermediaries. This phenomenon is widespread in southern Italy, particularly in agriculture, where migrants work under precarious conditions and are often victims of violence and extortion.

The four victims were workers without official employment who were active in the region. The discovery at a public petrol station suggests the crime took place in full public view – a sign of brutality and possibly also a message within the worker community. Investigators are now examining what conflicts or debts led to the murder and whether other individuals were involved.
